    well for starters peer pressure is a huge factor when considering drug use/abuse, all your friends are doing it :)

    however in terms of drug dependence (physical and psychological) i think that your right there is a genetic factor involved but i think its more of a combination of environmental conditioning (psychological) and the chemical process in the body (physical;programmed by genetics)

    but in terms of what really compels us to abuse drugs in the first place its all about peer pressure (an environmental factor) if you hang out with friends who frequently abuse drugs your going to abuse drugs too just to "fit in" and every time you abuse a drug you risk addiction.....
