I just might fall asleep to this for the next two weeks until I get my new phone and it finally drops on iOS. Thank you Sanuku for another gift!
I've been playing this for the last couple of days and, sadly, this is a step back from FFV, which I found to be a nice looking game, especially in battles. In FFV every asset was new and the new enemy sprites and effects looked gorgeous. It's a really nice looking game in battles. FFVI, on the other hand, reuses a lot of old assets upscaled. I think they believed the original assets were still good enough (while in FFV they clearly aren't) so they didn't bother making everything new. Most of the backgrounds are original, but some are upscaled from the old game (in battles I believe they are all new though). With monsters it's worse. Remember how gorgeous the monsters in FFV looked? Very sharp, very beautiful. Well, in FFVI they are the same sprites from the original game upscaled and touched up a bit. They still look good, but nowhere near as good as in FFV. Some battle effects (like fire) are also sprites and not brand new effects like in FFV. Also, while this colorful and cartoony artstyle works for FFV, it clashes with FFVI's style and some of the atmosphere is lost in the translation. I was really disappointed because since I enjoyed FFV I bought FFVI on day one expecting an improvement. It's unfortunate the way Square-Enix phoned in this one. That said, if it's the only way you have to play FFVI I guess it's worth buying.
Almost everyone noticed this too. I guess the purpose of releasing the game on Google Play first is to see the impressions of those guys. And if they didn't like it, iOS people will not like it too.. And they will not make money if we didn't like it .. So uhh yeah.
Why does it matter if they used old assets? People want the old assets. Of course they are good enough, people wanted nothoing more than a pixel for pixel remake of snes. Im trying not to defend sqeenix but I keep hearing the most nitpicky things. These games should be about the story, gameplay and progression, wich are fully intact. They are supposed to be enjoyable even if drawn with stick figures. You can miss the old art all you want, but the new style not only is good enough (in my opinion it looks great), but detracts nothing from the overall game id say.
I agree with you. But if they brought down the brightness, and didn't make the female characters look like those big-eyed princess dolls in the pink toy aisles, then the look would correspond better to the darker story and mood. Either way, though, I'm getting it day one.
I'm just saying it's a step down from FFVI. It might be good enough (I even said it was still worth getting), but I wanted more than good enough. And in my opinion the inconsistent visuals DO detract from the game, it loses a lot of its atmosphere because of it, and it's simply unpleasant to look at. Want to use the old assets? Great! But do it with everything. Mixing old and new doesn't work well here and it creates an inconsistent look. It's a mix mash of different art styles that comes off amateurish. Yes the game is still enjoyable, that doesn't mean there's nothing wrong with it. But if you really don't care about the visuals and would still buy it if it was drawn with stick figures, be my guest. That would be lowering my standards too much, but that's just me. If you think it looks great, good for you, I was merely expressing my opinion, which is that FFV looked great, FFVI doesn't.
Thats fair enough. Iv also said before how great it would be if they re-imagined ff6 with a totaly new, mature kind of artstyle. they could damn near market it as a brand new game, kind of like how FF3 felt new and ff4 as well with the 3d remake. Seems like a wasted opportunity there to resell one of their most beloved games. Now they have to fight against the current of fanboy backlash wich will detract from sales. People can focus on other things tho, like the soundtrack wich is among the best all time in a video game. The gameplay wich is unchanged, and hopefully the removal of bugs. For those who dont remember, ff6 on snes was riddled with strange bugs and exploits like being able to vanish/Xzone through every battle in the game including bosses. Im hoping they cleaned it up at least.
Well, i think it's selfish to say "we don't asked for revamped graphics QQ". SE surely don't ported it for old school players only but also for todays gamers and these ppl just won't play with super pixelated retro graphics. They want a fresh and modern 2D look. Just think about all these 3D Remakes. I'm sure many todays gamers had missed out on these FF ports if they were in old pixelated retro style.
There's no way to please everyone, just look at the amount of people who complained when it was rereleased for the PSX and GBA. At least this time there's a new look. Although it sucks that they don't believe in the iPhone enough to go all out like they did for FF4 on the PSP (the 2D graphics are done a lot better IMO)
Wow, after watching that I think I really like the new sprites. The only nitpick I have is that everyone seems to have incredibly great posture. Haha. Surely their backs should curve slightly.
i think because of the reaction of the masses, they might improve the iOS version and it might take some time.
No I doubt it. Square enix has never done anything like that in the past. Judging by their tweet I believe they just are sitting in Apple's queue.
http://kotaku.com/major-glitch-makes-final-fantasy-vi-unbeatable-on-andro-1505100344 Thats why I don't mind android getting games first.
As long as they come up with a patch quick it wouldn't be too bad. Apple can get emergency patches out in less than 24 hours (usually closer to 12)
I have to ask, is this one of this shitty ports like chrono trigger where we have to ZOOM in (2x) on ipad? Or will it at LEAST upscale to retina resolution? Thanks
