The reason that vertical scrollers work better is that with relative touch controls, far and away the best type for touch screen shmups, people generally have to use their left hand on a horizontal scroller since scrolling is usually left to right and you don't want to block what is in front of you which is generally where most of the action is, and most people would prefer to control with their right hand. Dariusburst did it nearly flawlessly though IMO. A few others did it pretty well, but I believe that's the main reason there are so many more vertical scrollers, in short you want RT controls, but RT controls are better suited to vertical scrolling.
Yes overall Raiden Legacy is pretty good, especially cause it has 4 of the old games. But the framerates are not quite smooth, and the compressed music and sound is pretty poor.
If one plays on hdmi tv, like Dariusburst, Sine Mora, or Deathsmiles, landscape is wonderful on tv. Really wonderful.
Because of this thread i went to play Blazing Star for the first time in ages, must have an issue with ios7 as you only see half the screen, arrrgh ! Emailed the devs but who knows if they'll get back to me
Yeah, i agree about boss fights in shmups - these go hand in hand for me and i guess i will be disappointed if i played a shmup that didn't have a boss fight. Having said that, from my own forthcoming game point of view, i'm kind of merging the endless runner with shmup mechanics/gameplay rather than creating a pure old school shmup - though i do have boss fights in it (admittedly with the same boss character..)! And also agree about the controls for touchscreen devices - i am particularly trying hard to avoid the controls from blocking the screen, especially as i primarily use my iPhone 4 for testing so less screen estate. Cheers,
I've been trying to post to get the game fixed, cause it is a great icade and hdmi game. I do fear this maybe an icade related interference problem with ios 7 like plasma sky and some others are going through.
Cave shooters belong in their own genre, AKA 'bullet Hell shmups'. People need to know what they are in for with a game like those... Toon Shooters was a very cool game, but it was tuned a little too aggressively for IAP. It would have made for an awesome $1.99 Premium game tuned accordingly. Plasma Sky is fun but wears thin too soon.
No mention of Sunny Tam? Both Danmaku games kill. I'd also add rRootage to the list of all-time vertical shmup greats.
That's why I linked the existing best shmup threads. There are already pretty exhaustive lists there, no point in creating another one.
Grazing is a dominant factor of the gameplay and scoring for Danmaku and seemed like a fitting way to label the game. Grazing is when you fly your ship dangerously close to incoming bullets and are rewarded for doing so. You can also find this mechanic in Phoenix HD with the Shogun, where grazing initiates your weapons. I recommend both Danmaku 2 and trying out the Shogun.
