I don't understand why the black bars above and below the screen on the iPhone need to be so large. The home button could be made smaller or slimmer. The speakers could be shifted upwards.

    Something akin to this...

    or this (but less ugly)

In short, there seems to be little good reason why the iPhone screen couldn't have been made bigger/longer (or wider in landscape mode) for this upcoming hardware revision. The phone itself could've been made a mm or two wider if Apple wished to do this while keeping the screen proportions the same.

Software already knows to ignore touches at the very edges of the screen because the software knows that touches at the very most edges are from where your fingers are holding the phone.

It displays things on it perfectly fine and you could still use that space for gesturing. It just knows to ignore your finger tips when they've been stationary on that spot.

If your finger ends up there as part of a long gesture, it won't ignore it. It just ignores it if you finger is stationary somewhere at the edge of the screen. This already done for most of the software on the iphone. Try it out.

Perhaps someone could email [email protected]

    Well, he had better.

What's Steve Jobs Touch Arcade account name anyways Mr. Adminstrator? I'm sure he likes gaming on the iPhone and iPad just as much as the rest of us. And even multibillionaires like Steve Jobs could stand to save a few bucks by fishing for promo codes on here.

Becuase you need somewhere to hold. Try to hold it in landscape mode and see where your thumbs will naturally land. Tried? Told you.. (of course there are other reasons too)

Resolution's different. It just affects clarity and sharpness. But really, why do you need a massive screen? Bigger doesn't necessarily mean better. The iPhone as is works great.

    Blasphemy!!!!!!!

How dare you question Uncle Steve's design. He is so smart and once he makes a personal iBot that is the size of your iPod touch with arms, legs, sentience, and the functions of an iPod touch while cleaning your house and training your dog and organizing your life, you will not get one.

I mean he has never made a mistake. Apple gets rid of him, they suck. He comes back Apple awesome again.

I've been hearing 960x640, dunno if I'm behind. iono how they'd squeeze all those pixels into almost the same screen space.

I'm fine with the current one too

 Gasp! Give this man a Nobel Prize, you hold something at its... EDGES?!

So basically, a dead space of screen surrounding usable screen... that's stupid.

    No, you are stupid. :p

Seriously though, how would it be dead space. It displays things on it perfectly fine and you could still use that space for gesturing. It just knows to ignore your finger tips when they've been stationary on that spot.

If your finger ends up there as part of a long gesture, it won't ignore it. It would just ignore it if you finger is stationary somewhere at the edge of the screen.

Wait you mean a device with a bigger screen? Omg!

I have to Uncle Steve about this idea. Maybe he could call it the iCallPad.
