I'm not sure about anyone else here, but I always dread Apple releasing new updates purely because I always end up having so much trouble installing them (I swear, these phones are more hassle than they're worth sometimes). In previous attempts the update would never install, instead giving me a message about my iPhone disconnecting. After enormous ammounts of hassle, I'd eventually get the update installed. Well, I wouldn't have been in a huge hurry for this current update (probably forseeing the problems I'd have yet again) but because it features a fix regarding a security flaw I figured better later than never... cue another annoying battle

It's the same as always, attempt to install said update then given an error message. Only this time, it was something about not being able to backup my iPhone. Well, after unchecking pretty much everything other than my music and Apps I managed to get it to proceed. Everything looked fine until I then received the dreaded error message again further down the process, only now my iPhone is stuck on the recovery mode screen (the one with the iTunes symbol and usb connector). Turning off and rebooting has solved this issue previously but this time my Iphone doesn't change and then when I hook it up to iTunes I get a message saying:

iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. You must restore this iPhone before you can use it with iTunes.

Now just so I know, restoring my iPhone will remove everything (except the preloaded stuff) off my iPhone right? Music... gone? Apps... gone? Saved progress.. gone? If thats the case then I think I've pretty much had it with the problems on top of problems and will end up getting rid of it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. :)

This exact problem happens to me every single time I update!
Long story short I haven't foun a cure and only update and friends houses. A big pain in the ass so much that I rarely update only for big ones. My figure is that something to do with a way certain computers commiunicate with iTunes causes errors ( in my case 14)
I would certaintly would like to know what causes this

    Did you backup?
If you did then your saves will be back

Do you have a recent backup handy?
Either on a disc or as a file, it doesn't matter.
When you restor your phone, it will ask you if you want to restore from a backup. When you restore your phone, everything (including your save files) will get copied onto your phone, and it will be just like it was before you started anything.
Remember, the key is to always have a recent backup ready. That way, if anything goes wrong, all you will lose is a bit of time.

Sorry for the late reply. I had a lot of problems with the back up and ended up just having to live with losing pretty much all my music, save data, phone numbers etc.

However, I do have another question if someone could be kind enough to shed some light. Basically, when I tried to restore from a recent back up, there was only one in the list which was from November last year. Now that struck me as odd given that my iPhone has been backed up many times since November with no problems (I even backed up from a previous recent save a couple of months ago)... so where did it/they go? They are not in the list anymore when I go into Preferences then Devices and I definately haven't deleted any back ups!

Is there somewhere on my PC where the back ups will be stored so I can locate them manually?

Again, thanks for everyones input! :)

Try uninstalling iTunes then reinstall it.

    Then plug your device in.

    See if that works...
