GeoDefense - the first or one of the first TDs, and still remain one of the only proper TDs in the store BeatRider - first app to utilize your own music for rhythm creation; still remains the only proper musical rhythm game in the store besides DDR-S Plants vs Zombies - probably the most addicting TD game ever Zenonia 1 - one of the first proper sprite-based KRPGs to hit the store; followed by a really crappy sequel >.>'; Chaos Rings - revolutionary in music, graphics, and script
Well it was the first nice looking TD game, but wasn't the first. I guess you could say that it might have started the whole TD craze, but I think if Fieldrunners never came out we'd still have a bunch of TD's in the App Store.
Actually, Fieldrunners came out almost 5 months before Geodefense. Also 7 Cities, Besiegement, iTD, The Creeps, TapDefense, and several others all came out months before Geodefense. Geodefense is a great game (although I don't know what you mean by "proper TD"), but it was in no way the game that started the TD craze. Given the release date, the continuing popularity, and the number of clones of it, the credit for that really needs to go to Fieldrunners.
Which TDs came out for the iPhone before Fieldrunners? Possibly, but you could probably say that for every genre defining game on anyone's list. If Flight control hadn't come out, then Harbor Patrol would have created the line drawing craze, and so on.
True, good point. And as for the first question I know of at least Mote-M, however I'm not sure if there were others. It might have been the first open field TD though.
My two picks There is no doubt there are many great games but if I had to choose two. The first would be Labyrinth. That was the app that made all my friends envious of my iphone and the accelerometer. The other is fieldrunners, I was hooked on that game for at least a month.
Red Conquest. It shows (why showed? It still shows ) that iPhone RTS games don't need to copy the controls of computer RTS games (example: selection rectangle... while pretty useful on the computer, most of it's several implementations in iPhone RTS games suck). Tilt to Live. One of these games that gives you this "Oh only one more try" feeling. Space Ninja. Just as addictive as Tilt to Live. Spider: The Secret of Bryce Manor. It's intuitive controls and nice graphics easily impress the normal user, but for those who dig deeper, a completely hidden storyline will show up. Once you found it, you feel that it adds a huge amount of depth to the game, although probably 90% of the people who ever played this game will never notice anything about the story. Hook Champ. I don't know if it's the first of it's kind, but it certainly revolutionized the genre. Sketch Nation. More a game creation kit than a game itself. Impressive. GraalOnline Classic. I watched the "most users online at the same time" record grow from ~80 to >1300... It lacks most of the features you would expect an MMORPG to have, but the social part is impressively well done.
Rock Band was more fun IMO. I also forgot to add Real Racing since it was the most influential racing game, and had the greatest graphics of the time, and Need for Speed Undercover, since it was the greatest arcade racer of the time and helped boost that type of game.
This may be a list of great games (I haven't played about half of them, so I don't know), but it certainly isn't a list of influential games. To be influential, a game needs to be so successful that it spawns a bunch of clones (FLight Control, Fieldrunners) or becomes a meme that shows up in other games (Pocket God). Red Conquest is a fantastic game, but it hasn't had very much influence on the iPhone market.
I concur. Pocket God's a good one Flight control and Doodle jump of course. those are two games people who see me with an iPod ask me about all the time I dunno about Labyrinth..Minigore?
Why Minigore? It came out after a whole bunch of other dual-stick shooters, and it wasn't the first breed of something new.
Well as far back as I remember, Minigore was the first one to draw such a large fanbase, therefore the first one to create iPhone fanboys
I purposely ignored Fieldrunners because I dislike that game. You got to be f*** kidding me. Warning, personal opinion: TTR is the worst rhythm game for the iDevice. DDRS and Beatrider beat that piece of crap by a mile.
OK, but I am not sure that your personal opinion of Fieldrunners is an indicator as to how influential it was. Now, if this thread was called, "Games Aurora liked", then your reasons for leaving it out would make complete sense.
If this thread was called "games everyone must agree on that are influential" then I wouldn't have posted here. In case you haven't noticed everyone's games are different. Why would I post something that I dislike?
Because something can be considered influential, even if you don't like it. For example, I dislike Hitler and Stalin, but I still consider that they were very influential.
you are right there the games are all fantastic but they didnt change the app store if you take flight control e.g. it made the line drawing genre popular i think those were influential: rolando 1 real racing flight controll minigore doodle jump gta cw
Doodle Jump-Papi Jump was first, but DJ perfected and expanded the formula, eventually becoming more popular than its predecessor Flight Control-Created its own genre. TTR-Enough said. Rolando- The first game that made major gaming sites take a closer look at the device. Eliminate-First "freemium" game, and first multiplayer FPS(I think). Real Racing-First 3d game to really push the system, proving it could compete with other gaming devices. Chaos Rings-Never played it, but its the first AAA game from a major developer exclusively for iDevice
Umm no. I would not post the games I dislike and glorify them as the most influential games. I don't even think Fieldrunners is influential to start with. It's all opinionated. You think it's good and influential, I don't.
