I've a xbox 360, can I use it to play LOL/dota-genre game? now I can play heroes of order & chaos on my ipad, it's very intuitive and comfortable.
Can I play Great Big War Game on xbox or ps3? which was rated 9.5 by IGN "Great Big War Game is a standout among war games on any platform ", I already played it many hours and still not finish it, let alone the online multiplayer mode I'd still not try it.
    see? why can't even compare?
no device is perfect and even in terms of deep big games, IOS is still has their own advantage. even though console is build for gaming, which not means they can win in every single genre.
you never always pay for what you get, just like one starts his life from born in different countries and regions in this world, they get pretty much differet lifes and they don't pay for that.

klarence ..you did 'give reasons' like you mentioned but most of us felt they were rather shallow and were representative of your obvious and distinct lack of console/desktop gaming experience. Everyone has their own opinions, fetishes and standards though so your opinion is just as correct or wrong as anyone's.

If you try to present things that can't be quantified for rigorous comparison as facts..you are taking an aggressive stance..no? well..that's all from me..reply if you wish.lol

P.S : you didn't answer my original question of if you have played any of the games I have listed.

I can tell you with confidence that if GBWG was on consoles (and as much as I like it, hey Rubicon!), it would be a budget price downloadable title. That doesn't mean it's not a great game, it just means it's not on the same level as retail console games in terms of production quality.

lack of console gaming exp? sir, why should compare the weakness part of IOS to console? why we don't ask can console play MMORPG?
I played some great console/pc games, such as red dead redemption, yes I enjoy them. so what? they are perfect? they are so divine even can't be compared to others? no way, sir.
RDR has a good story but it's really really repetitive. let alone part of AAA means great graphics, but RDR does not have good details.
just compare them, that the only way.
why can't even compare? I bought the game and played, I guess I'm supposed to have the right to make my own mind.

I agree with you for it will ve downloadable title on console, but big budget does not always guarantee gameplay, I don't care what's behind the game when we just compare the game quality.
and even it's on console, can it even be feels better than Ipad with console controller? see?
some people say touch control is inferior, but sometimes they are superior. From this point, Ipad is actually much better.
"it just means it's not on the same level as retail console games in terms of production quality"
I can't agree you with this, retail console games themselves has different quality, some of them are great but some are really poor. retail not equals quality.
how about compare the retail ds spiderman game to the gameloft's sometimes 1 dollar amazing spiderman game? the latter is so much better. I am not saying retail is bad, but from this example, you should agree retail and price never means quality.
and Lost wind is even free in IOS recently.

You're just reenforcing my original point. I came in here to say it depends on what you're talking about specifically. If you mean in terms of how enjoyable a game is then sure, iOS is just as important as any other platforms, some games here are much more fun than certain console games. However when the term is thrown around in regards to high production iOS titles... that's not what people mean.

ok, but let's don't be unjust.
even if we only compare really high budget AAA games, yes, IOS seems has nothing.
but same goes with Wii, from this point, ninetendo wii is not a console any more. because it can't handle AAA graphics.
But seriouly, is LOL not a AAA game? if it is, why can't heroes of order & chaos be a AAA game? just because it's not high budget?

  8. I agree, my new ipad does not hold its own to a xbox 360 for fps and sports games. Casual and mid action and shmups and dual sticks, I like ios better.

But really, it is not fair, ipad is made for other things like internet, youtube, news, television, word processing, etc, which a console can not do as well.

Plus I like touchscreen controls. But then again, I would like a wireless joystick for my new ipad.

Also, to throw more fuel to this thread, I like my new ipad tons more than a vita. Played a vita 10 times now, not impressed. Having a retina screen and a far bigger screen is a huge benefit. I wouldn't even think about getting a vita with games running close to $40 which ios games, you can get great games like Asphalt 7 for a buck or free.

yes, everyone has their own idea, but for what reason we must compare the weakness part of IOS to consoles? I really can't understand it.
I don't force you guys to change your mind, but you see someone told me I can't compare IOS to console, what? I even can't compare? so I lost from the start not allowed to win and you say I'm the agressive one, is this even close to fair play?
it's crazy, if I don't compare it, how do I even know the difference? and I don't have right to compare gaming machines? they're just electronics.

Yeah, while many 3d games run better on consoles, and I like the fact they are dvd based, so they can add videos and more graphics to their games, I would still buy an ipad 4 over a xbox 360 for the above reasons and the reasons in my previous post including web, news, and watching tv. Assuming I only had less than a thousand bucks and didn't have either a console or an ipad.

But best of all, I love having 6000 games and apps that I got in the same year. That is equivalent to getting about 5 console games in price with console games running up to $60. Plus on ios, you can download so many games for free and some of them are excellent like how Asphalt 7, Galaxy on Fire 2, and Sonice the Hedgehog ep 2, all went free just this past week.

So in these aspects, would much rather have an ipad 4 over a console anyday. Except on days I want to play FPS, sports, or street fighter games. Then I will have to go over to my friend's house toting an ipad in my backpack. :)

I'm not intentionally picking out the best games to make an unfair comparison, I'm just using the games I personally own and play on both platforms. I own the best of the best on both iOS and 360/PS3 and I also own sub-par games from both. It's a generalization, but the generalization says that "console quality" as a term does not mean that the games are on the same level as console games, because the differences are vast and varied.

  12. Yeah, I wish I had both too to get the best of both worlds. Fps, sports, and street fighter games on a whole play much better on a console. Madden football on ios is a joke, marvel vs capcom 2 on ios pails in comparison to Marvel vs capcom 3 on the ps3, and even Nova 3 just would be a lower grade fps on the current consoles.

But if it costs me around a thousand to get a console and a bunch of games, I would rather save up money for the ipad 5. I like its portability, and multipurpose use. When it comes out, I'm sure there will be more ios vs console debate, but by then, probably the xbox 720 will be out, so the ipad 5 won't be able to compete.

The biggest con to ios gaming though is disk space. Consoles have tons of space for videos, and ios games can not compete with this 2gb limit. If not for this limit, then I do think the ipad 4 could start getting closer to being a console close, but really, disk space is such a factor and it hasn't really been touched on here.

Anyway, both consoles and ios games have their strong points and weaknesses. They are more like apples and oranges. A debate about which is better between the xbox 360 vs ps3 is probably more relevant.

Cause I sure heck won't defend ios vs consoles if you are talking about the higher end AAA games. No doubt, consoles are better for that.

I agree with you but I do think it's fair.
touch control is actually better in some genres and LOL is not a niche genre.
it's fun to see some guys refuse to answer why heroes of order & chaos is not console quality.
it's deep, control is very good, graphic is really decent. it's not lack of quality at all.
and obviously current xbox/ps3 can never win in this genre.
yes, pretty simple fact, just why ignore this fact? (or it's not fact, then why? ) I really can't understand.

it's just like to say walkman is build for music, so the tape player is better than a cellphone in terms of music, because the cellphone is build for making phone call.
But it may turns out to be the cellphone is better in the field of music playing.
who knows? what kind of a phone it is, we must compare them to know the facts.

No games on iOS are console quality. The graphics may be up to scratch but there will never be the same amount of content and vice versa.

There are definitely some top drawer titles but sometimes the simpler games are better on iOS.

I've spent a lot of time with Asphalt 7 after dismissing it for quite some time.

This, i love my iDevices and I play on them way more than on my xbox, ps3 or vita but there ARE differences in the scope of the games in consoles and even handhelds.

Using Asphalt 7 as a comparison I can say its a very enjoyable game, it has great graphics but it really doesnt hold a candle to Need for Speed most wanted on my Vita, you could say that NFS cost me 40 bucks and that it isnt a fair comparison and you would be right!

I dont think anyone whos been here writing about not having real console quality on iOS hates the platform, its just that its so different. The bugdet for ios games is way smaller than for consoles so usually if you have great graphics you dont have a lot of content and viceversa.

Play Skyrim for a console rpg, Halo4 /CoD or something like that for FPS and youll see the vast difference between them and any ios offering and im really not talking just about graphics and physical controls, theyre bigger and better in almost every conceivable way to similar attempts on iOS. Thats not a jab against ios is just the very real difference between console and mobile gaming.

All in all I love iOS, I consider myself a gamer since a long time and I can say that theres loads of quality in the platform . It has its own style and I love it but lets not get carried away, we're not there yet.

    • GTA Chinatown Wars
    • GTA 3
    • Bastion
    • Superbrothers: Sword&Sworcery
    • World of Goo
    • Swordigo
    • Nihilumbra
    • Incoboto
    • Aaaaaaaaaa!
    • Scribblenauts Remix
    • Perfect Cell
    • Trigger Fist
    • Rayman Jungle Run (maybe, but it's pretty close)

All great examples of console quality iOS games; ones I felt were very complete.

This is actually a pretty good post to demonstrate why iOS games -aren't- console quality, if you ask me.

Chinatown Wars is a handheld console game, so yeah... I'll give you that, but I think the general idea is that we're aiming for PS3 and 360 with the term "console quality".

GTA 3 is a fine console quality experience... only it's an old console. If we're including older consoles, why not throw SNES into the mix too? Almost every iOS game becomes console quality then. Again, I think the idea behind the term is comparison with -current- consoles.

Games like Bastion, World of Goo and Incoboto are brilliant, but they'd come under the budget/downloadable bracket of games, which are intentionally kept seperate from full retail experiences.

Rayman Jungle Run is practically perfect in terms of graphics and presentation, but the whole mechanic behind the gameplay and the simplified controls turn it into something of a mini game, rather than a full-on platformer. Compared directly to Rayman Origins the differences are obvious. To be honest, I can imagine Origins being ported perfectly well to iOS, so in that sense, yeah, that could be a console quality iPhone game... but it's about as basic as console games come.

When an iOS game is often 69p you're never really going to get 'console quality' are you ? But for 69p its amazing the quality of games you do actually get. The value for money is superb but i never compare iOS games to console quality.

Considering i can take 200+ games with me (plus comics/music/movies) in the palm of my hand compared to a console, i'm loving the qualty of games i have.

I've had many handheld consoles in the past (Game n Watch, Gameboy, Gameboy Advance, GP32, GP2X, Pocket PC) and its the best device i've ever had.

Theres great great games on iOS, some have stunning graphics, some dont, but so many have great gameplay which is key.

Games such as Bastion (And Lili) are very very impressive for iOS though
