Your entire post pretty much confirms everything I said before. -------------- Anyway, if you guys think that iPhone games are superior in any way to the games available for any other "main" system out there, you live in a bubble. If you truly, truly, honestly feel that way though, and are not trying to fool yourself into thinking that, then good for you. For me, as well as probably the majority of people who own other systems, the iPod and iPhone simply can not stand to other systems in any conceivable way other than casual gaming (which in that regard is easily one of the best). Going from a Nintendo DS game like, say, Shin Megami Tensei Devil Survivor to pretty much any game on the app store is a massive downgrade. When I first got my iPod Touch I was like wow, you really can buy a lot of games for only a few dollars? So I used my gift card and bought like 15 of the "best" games I read on the internet. It was a terrible decision. After that I learned that I would rather buy one absolutely fantastic game (like the aforementioned for DS), than 15 that do not hold a candle to it in terms of gameplay, presentation, longevity, etc. So far, I've been really disappointed with the platform. One of the first games that I got was Spider: TSOBM, and immediately after finishing that game I envisioned an absolutely brilliant future for the system. Sadly, there hasn't been a single game of the caliber of Spider, which is the only iPhone game I'd pit against any other game out there. For someone who spends time playing console epics like Bioshock 2, Mass Effect 2, or triple A portable stuff like The World Ends With You or Mario and Luigi RPG3, the iPhone is just a platform to kill a few second with its apps, but no way in hell would I spend my time playing games on that instead of my other systems. On the bright side of things, I do recognize the value you can get from some (just a few) iPhone games. Hook Champ and The Creeps! come to minds (really great games), and Popcap's Plants vs Zombies should be also great. I just wish there were more of these titles and not just half-assed attempts from developers to copy the games that were designed specifically for consoles with better control inputs.
personally, like i said before, i guess i am one of those few who prefer portable vs console games. thus, i like the iphone the best.
Yea definetly. My friends will be like "what are you doing later" or they would say "What did you do this weekend" and I say "I was on my iPod. HAHAHA!!!!!!!!!
You do realize the DS has alot more hardcore/deep games than the iPhone right? The DS has mass appeal, its for both hardcore and casual audiences. The iPhone is the one with all the "trinkity" games.
The DS has been around for many years and has huge support from the best japanese developers. They definately have the best selection of games of any console IMO. Mainly because im interested in RPG's SRPG's & TBS games. But really, Games like Battle for Wesnoth would never show up on the DS. The content + hardcoreness of that game kills almost any DS game hands down.
I own a numer of consoles, both regular and portable, but honestly play my iPod Touch the most. Games are so much cheaper and affordable. I think games have come a long way and are getting better every day for this platform. Being a dad, Its great to pick up and play a game instantly. I also love the fact that I can have many games on such a small device and not have to carry around umds or DS cards. I bought a PSP Go looking for this same benefit, but it's hard paying so much for games from the PSN.
Really, I could buy xbox or pc or whatnot games if I wanted to money is not an issue. The fact of the matter for me is that I enjoy iPhone games more than console games for some strange reason (My MW2 play time is a fraction of just my labyrinth 2 play time) Also 20-30 iPhone good games for $60 gets me a hell of a lot more play time than 1 xbox game. I would honestly rather play iPhone games than any of those games listed (Although I loved Mario Galaxy ) and I don't encourage devs to make clones. I may be one of the few with the mindset, but there are quirky people out there like me who like the iPhone over the console
oh my gosh! you are my twin or something! i agree with everything you just said! every word! i too prefer the iphone! you are my long lost twin! what is your birthday again? you are even in my signature!!!!
I'll just say that if the next DS had a good phone and web browser built in along with GOOD DLC (old GBA library)- I'd be outta here, never to return. Unless of course the iphone started getting some good Final Fantasy love. But of course, I doubt Nintendo would want to do something that Hi Tech and cool.
And who knows what the IPAD will do for gaming. If the UNREAL engine can truly run on the Ipod/IPhone/IPad avenue, there is an endless supply of games that can be available for the IPAD. With a built in computer and the possibility of an expanded controller... we may very well see the first ever portable console level gaming machine... well other then a high performance laptop, but even a laptop offering pales in comparison to the shere volume of games available on the ipod.
Here is the original story showing the unreal engine running on the current iPod Touch (also runs on iPhone 3gs.) http://www.anandtech.com/gadgets/showdoc.aspx?i=3695
To the people who want to dismiss the iPhone OS devices as vastly inferior to the PSP, DS, and other gaming platforms, you need to look at the trends, and not just what has occurred in the past. It seems to me that every month brings new games on the App store that are improving in quality at a rapid rate. Lets just look at the past few weeks. We have GTA: Chinatown Wars, which is arguably the best version of the game because it combines both the graphics of the PSP version with the touch elements of the DS version. We also have other new games such as Broken Sword, Deathtrap Dungeon and An Assassin in Orlandes, Space Miner, GT Racing: Motor Academy, and new levels for COD: World at War Zombies. This is just in the past few weeks, and I'm leaving out dozens of other good games recently released in the App store. How many great new games have come out for PSP and Nintendo DS during the same time period? With the iPad, and next generation iPhone and iPod Touch coming out later in 2010, plus a great increase in resources and developers targeting the App store in 2010, I think that it is reasonable to assume that iPhone OS gaming will continue to improve at a faster rate vis a vis the PSP and Nintendo DS and all other gaming platforms.
You haven't played the DS version if you think the iPhone port is better in any way other than visuals, and even that is arguable since both have a very distinct look. Here's the reality: virtual d-pads/buttons will never replace and actual control. And again, people keep bringing games that are good for iPhone standards but would be considered average for other platforms. Do you really think that there are DS/PSP owners, or even worse, 360/PS3 owners who are like, man, I wish I could play COD Zombies instead of Modern Warfare 2?
The iphone is its own distinct console with its own limitations and benifits. There are plenty of GREAT games for the device, but the iphone's great games are much different then the great games for xbox or DS. I'm suprised by how 'hardcore' some of these casual games are - in terms of chalenge / longevity is concerned. They can be quite satisfying. To compare it to other consoles is pointless, as the hardware and controls are so vastly different than anything that has existed before. Therefore the games that succeed on the platform are going to be different as well. That being said, I'm loving the gaming experience on the iphone. Its fresh and different and the creativity coming out of these smaller developers is exciting to watch. I do play my iphone more than all of my other consoles, mostly because ive grown quite bored of FPS games anyway.
I will admit that you can't beat the cost of iPhone games. I just picked up GTA for $7. Even if it is a bit inferior to the DS/PSP versions, that is at least 4 to 5 times less than the price of the game on the DS/PSP. Can't beat that. If more portable console quality games like GTA come out for the iPhone, it will be the best portable device period.
I don't really play shooters or RPGs on the iPhone right now because there are much better options such as Dragon Age: Origins or Mass Effect 2 for the PC. But as one of the posters said earlier, the iPhone OS games have their own strengths, such as portability, variety and number of great games, cost of games, etc. The bottom line is that if you spend more time playing iPhone games, and if you get more enjoyment playing those games than any other platform, then the iPhone would be your personal number 1 platform for video games. If you spend all your time playing MW2 online multiplayer on X360, then obviously the X360 would be your number 1 platform. I am a PC and iPhone gamer and I don't do a lot of online play, and I don't really play console or PSP or DS games. Personally I believe that for a lot of reasons, the iPhone is the best mobile game platform out there, and it's only going to get better. But if you like your DS games and you play a lot on Xbox live or whatever, then that's great, I have no problem with that.
Just one game from DS dominates all other portable gaming....GOLDEN SUN DS WOO and not to mention ragnarok online ds coming out in 3 days ;] Btw ds+psp=not console
