There's one way to win but an infinite number of ways to die. Game play focuses on a smooth learning curve with strategic depth and intuitive/beautiful appearance within the strictures of ASCII/Unicode display. "...on the iPad, Brogue is an even more incredible feat than it is on the Mac: there aren’t a lot of roguelikes that can jump from a keyboard to a touch-based interface without coming off worse for wear. It’s every bit as good on the iPad as it is on the Mac." - Cult of Mac "[...] it manages to make use of its ASCII visuals to create some truly impressive-looking environments [...] it’s high fantasy to the core; filled with kobolds, goblins, wands, spell scrolls, and more." - 148Apps "It's a bit weird and clunky, but yeah, it's still Brogue" - Roguelike Radio Information Seller:Seth Howard Genre:Adventure, Role Playing Release:Mar 21, 2013 Updated:Mar 04, 2020 Version:1.3.4 Size:37.2 MB TouchArcade Rating:Unrated User Rating: (18) Your Rating:unrated Compatibility:HD Universal Greyskull Well-Known Member Dec 13, 2009 5,587 1 38 Photographer/Social Sciences adjunct/sweet sweet l Fort Lauderdale #2 Greyskull, Mar 22, 2013 It's already in the appstore even if the TA app didn't handle that link properly. A free, ipad only roguelike. MidianGTX Well-Known Member Jun 16, 2009 3,738 10 38 #3 MidianGTX, Mar 22, 2013 Wrong section for iPad-only Thanks for pointing it out though, this looks amazing! It remains to be seen just how well the game plays, but starting a new game gives me a very positive feeling. It doesn't look easily accessible at all, but I consider that a good thing. It's either a port of a PC roguelike or is designed to resemble one, which to me says "deep, strategic and unforgiving", which is exactly what you want from this type of game. Any iPad owners that are also roguelike fans (or retro fans, old school PC gamers or "real" hardcore gamers) should be jumping on this right now. Oh, and perfectly crisp on the new iPad if you're picky, like me. Ravenblack Well-Known Member Feb 24, 2009 1,755 0 0 Singapore #5 Ravenblack, Mar 22, 2013 Nice. Seems like there's something for everyone this week. blibby Active Member Mar 3, 2011 40 0 0 #6 blibby, Mar 22, 2013 Wow! Another cool surprise. Thanks! Certainly a challenger for best roguelike on the AppStore, and its free! Ravenblack Well-Known Member Feb 24, 2009 1,755 0 0 Singapore #7 Ravenblack, Mar 22, 2013 It might have stuck with the ascii style, but it does indeed feel like it's been made a bit friendlier. IMHO, the menu and interface seems friendlier than some of the versions of Nethack and Rogue you can find for ios. You're not required to know or memorize any keyboard commands for this one. Inventory items -- tap on the name of the item, and you get a short description of the item, options what you can do with it. Players might at first be puzzled by the "apply" button which is simply means to use, to eat, to read, etc depending on what the item is. Items and creatures spotted is listed on the left hand side of the screen, all noted, so you don't have to puzzle out what a letter or symbol means. Movement is double tap, auto-path, or use the 8 directional dpad on the left corner. It's very colorful too, as it tries to represent the environment. There's even some animation of water and gaseous bodies. You can see even from the screenshots in the appinfo above, there's descriptive text about your environment and your encounters, top and bottom of the screen. Like a text adventure. There is no sound but this type of game tend to be silent. It does record your score and what got you killed. There's a feature for recording your game, but I have not used that. The challenge seems newbie friendly, as said in the app description it is aiming for a smooth learning curve. I just think it's beautiful, is just a joy to explore. When you're in the game, the help <?> under the Menu option seems to be something left over from probably the pc version, since it seems to refer to keyboard commands which doesn't seem to exist at all in this port. iPadisGreat Well-Known Member Dec 10, 2012 2,390 0 0 #11 iPadisGreat, Mar 22, 2013 Last edited: Mar 22, 2013 Downloaded. You can touch and hold to get a magnifying glass. But it is still tricky with things being small. Add: yeah, the magnifying glass feature helps when aiming throw darts at an enemy! Sandoze Member Mar 22, 2013 23 0 0 #14 Sandoze, Mar 22, 2013 That'd be great! But sadly it seemed only fitting for a large screen release seeing how navigation via touch can already be tricky on the big screen. As you deduced earlier it is a straight port of Brian Walker's seminal and very accessible Brogue available for PC/Mac/Linux and can be found here. This means all the keyboard command messaging still exists. It's my personal preference when playing games is take them with me via tablet and Brogue seemed like a perfect candidate for a mobile platform. Not to mention the creator was highly receptive to bringing it to a new platform. Sounds like you're enjoying it, feel free to provide any feedback! Oh, and a little trick I learned as I was testing the game: You can tap/dtap the items and creatures in the left hand list to interact with them. aceyprime Well-Known Member Apr 23, 2010 293 0 0 #15 aceyprime, Mar 22, 2013 I won't be able to give this a try until tonight but Brogue looks absolutely amazing! Sandoze: thanks so much for porting this - we're always in need of great roguelikes! Is there an option to use tiles? I found some tips here, a wiki and a great Beginner's Guide on the wiki. Enjoy! Sandoze Member Mar 22, 2013 23 0 0 #16 Sandoze, Mar 22, 2013 Last edited: Mar 25, 2013 No plans for tiles yet as it would take a significant development effort. My main focus is ensuring a great experience for the vanilla Brogue. For example here is the latest update pending approval: 1.0.1 currently in review • Added a 'show inventory' option on death. • Setting the pinch to hide directional controls now takes effect in the current application session and not the next time you launch fresh. • Updated a few assets so they 'pop' a bit more. • Several bug fixes that may have led to the application freezing. • Fixed a rare crash when generating a new level. Changes in 1.0.2 (waiting for the current update to be accepted): • Performance improved. Menus and popups should now be lightning fast! • Magnifying glass is more responsive. • Adjusted hit area of the directional buttons so items behind it aren't accidentally hit while using. iPadisGreat Well-Known Member Dec 10, 2012 2,390 0 0 #17 iPadisGreat, Mar 22, 2013 Can you make the "auto" play slower?
