Of course not! I can't just add a game to the list like that. Besides, GD: Swarm isn't really so groundbreaking that it deserves a whole poll just to include it. I might redo the TD poll, but only in like 6 months or something once we've done a few other categories.
Vector graphics do not a retro game make. GeoDefense and DropShip both feature advanced particle and glow effects. This is about as far from retro as it gets. For any game to be considered retro, it should not contain stuff you couldn't do without hardware acceleration and/or a fast processor. (i.e. particle effects, alpha blending, bloom, volumetric effects, complex physics, etc. I'd allow texture mapping in 3D provided it didn't get into advanced accelerated stuff like decal mapping, bi/trilinear filtering, LOD, etc.) And yes, y'all can go ahead and get off my lawn. My top 5? Wolfenstein 3D Saucelifter (I'm hedging here, as some effects border on advanced) Buggy Blaster Dig Dug Remix (in classic mode) Q*Bert (in classic mode) Boulder Dash would have been included here but I think they messed up classic mode enough that it doesn't feel like the original.
1. The Secret of Monkey Islands - Special Edition 2. Vector Tank 3. C64 4. Saucelifter 5. Space Invaders Infinity Gene
Except... the gameplay in geoDefense and Dropship is retro anyway so there wasn't much point in bringing that up. Vector graphics are extremely reminiscent of retro gaming, regardless of the modern flair that's been added on top. There's barely a soul out there who doesn't look at geoDefense and feel a twang of nostalgia so technicalities aside, I think they count.
Still a couple of days left, surely some retro games deserve some love? Squareball? geoDefense Swarm? Meteor Blitz?
The "retro games" category, unlike the others, is so fuzzy/subjective/broad as to be almost meaningless. Wouldn't it make more sense to break it down more narrowly, i.e. best official licensed port of an arcade game?
I vote for Vector Tanks for my "true" retro game of choice. Spheroids would be a close second. CS.one is my pick for best "neo-retro" game.
How many games are like that? Maybe 10? I don't think it's too fuzzy. Besides, games are allowed to overlap multiple categories.
O I was waiting for iBlast Moki to come out so I could count it in the polls So glad I did. Well here we are: Physics Based Games
