Large maps for a longer game, small maps for a shorter game. STORY In the far distant future, the story of a united Earth branching out to the stars is more legend than history. Humankind spread across the galaxy to planets in all regions of space. But the distance was great, communication and travel were slow… and human nature took a dark turn as civilization collapsed, sending worlds into chaos and barbarism overrun by marauders. Your world has risen from the chaos—a united republic like the Earth of legend. Technology for space travel improved steadily. Hope of restoring order to the other worlds is growing. Reaching out to other worlds—you found there is a growing threat of tyrants seeking galactic domination. Technology— naively shared at first, then stolen—has created formidable opponents and a long war ensued. Battle lines were drawn and regions defined, yet no one anticipated the discovery of the Astra Itinera. Strategy has a new name... CoreyB Well-Known Member Aug 25, 2011 503 0 0 Aircraft Mechanic Chicago, IL #3 CoreyB, Aug 18, 2012 It weird how this touch arcade bot posts crappy looking games then right after you post, wow look at this 4x gem nobody is talking about. Check the galactic dominion thread, it's exactly the same. Is this some kind of scam or what. Royce Well-Known Member Mar 22, 2011 4,240 180 63 #4 Royce, Aug 18, 2012 This game came out first... Unfrozen Well-Known Member Patreon Silver Apr 11, 2011 252 0 0 Canada #5 Unfrozen, Aug 18, 2012 The bot generated those threads because I tapped 'Start Thread' from the game page on the Touch Arcade App. It's a feature intended for players to initiate threads for games they are interested that currently have no thread, not a scam. I did a search through the TA App for 4X to see if I could uncover good 4X games that I haven't come across. It's similar to doing an AppShopper search where you get different results than through the AppStore. I've found Astra Itinera to be more geared for playing very quick and simple 4X matches while Galactic Dominion has a lot more complexity to it. Astra reminds me of Master of Orion or the first couple Space Empires, streamlined. My comments are genuine and my nerd love for 4X games shall not be questioned. JK, you should try out generating a new thread through the App, it's pretty easy. Surprisingly though, Astra Itinera is iPad only but very simple and Galactic Dominion, which is iPhone/iPod Touch is the more immersive game. A bit odd device strategy for both games but hopefully they go universal. CoreyB Well-Known Member Aug 25, 2011 503 0 0 Aircraft Mechanic Chicago, IL #6 CoreyB, Aug 19, 2012 Alright my bad just thought it was weird, if you want a 4x game, starbase Orion is by far, IMO , the best money can buy. It's even better then most pc 4x games out there. Unfrozen Well-Known Member Patreon Silver Apr 11, 2011 252 0 0 Canada #7 Unfrozen, Aug 19, 2012 Agreed, Starbase Orion is the best 4X on iOS. I am always on the lookout for different experiences though and i do enjoy the 5-10 min matches. The game has a pretty cool premise. Civilization fell into chaos and you are re-establishing order at the same time as other ambitious empires are expanding. The galaxy starts off blanketed in a fog of war, except your planets, and every sector you discover takes control of the sector from marauders. There's an update journal that you can read every turn that catalogues battles and lists sectors or planets changed hands, even when an empire discovers a new sector and drives back the mauraders. It's encouraging to hear your comments on Astra Itinera, so I wanted to say thanks! This Fall I released two minor updates and I'm working on another. Regarding it being iPad only, I did that because I didn't enjoy playing it on an iPhone's smaller screen so I focused on the iPad. I did try to streamline it in functionality and in UI. I played it as I developed it which affected the outcome (lol, I can't tell you how many times I intended to test something and got wrapped up in playing out the game). I also like 10-20 min games as well as the occasional long game (thus the options). Feel free to contact me direct with questions or comments! Regards, John TokyoDan Well-Known Member Oct 7, 2010 394 2 18 #10 TokyoDan, Dec 4, 2013 Got Astra Itinera. Interesting game with clean design but one serious problem and one game-killing problem: The serious problem is the tutorial and manual are not enough and I can't figure out how to play. The game-killer is, it is a long game...with no fu#*in' way to save your progress. What was the developer thinking nyquist Member Dec 3, 2013 8 0 0 Developer Colorado http://nyquist.net #11 nyquist, Dec 4, 2013 TokyoDan, I'm the developer so I've an idea of what he is thinking First question for you... Are you using 1.2? If so, is the help not clear enough? What can make it better? I'm thinking to help you quickly, I can record a short tutorial video and post it on the Facebook page. Would that help? Regarding the saving... When I was making it, the games were not that long to me and since the only way I'd lose my progress is if I manually force quit the application I lowered the priority on that feature's necessity. When you say you want to save it, is it because you typically force quit your apps, or is it because the OS is killing it to get more resources (for example when you use a resource heavy app, the OS may kill ones in the background), or is it because you want to have several saved versions so you can go back in time if you made a mistake? Feel free to message me direct or reply here. TokyoDan Well-Known Member Oct 7, 2010 394 2 18 #12 TokyoDan, Dec 5, 2013 Hi, I just bought last night the one that is on the App Store so I guess it is the latest version. i read everything, but onces i got in the game I had no idea of what was going on. The controls are few so are simple enough to understand. My problem was with the overall gameplay. I couldn't tell who was doing what, seemd like the AI was doing a whole bunch of things when I thought it was supposed to be my turn. And those incomplete lines confused me...how are they used. And yes. A tutorila video would be nice (necessary). As for the save. The game does seem long to not have a save feature. and yes, i always force quit apps that I'm not using at the moment. I don't like to have a bunch of apps open or running in the background. And I don't care what everybody says...i think it runs down the battery more quickly even when the apps are in the background. I have no idea what they may be doing, sending info. And as a experienced coder I know I'm right in that respect. There are even modules that developers can put in their games that when in the background they mine for Bitcoin without the user even knowing about it. So I force quit everything i'm not using. nyquist Member Dec 3, 2013 8 0 0 Developer Colorado http://nyquist.net #13 nyquist, Dec 5, 2013 TokyoDan, Thanks for the response. Regarding turns, the computer is only moving when it says "Computer moving, please wait...". You will not be able to move while that is displayed. I'm not sure what you mean by "incomplete lines". I will post in this thread when I've recorded a video tutorial. As for always force quitting. That's not really necessary for Astra Itinera (or most apps). Since you're a coder, you can read here on how iOS handles multi-tasking (it's not like on the desktop). For non-coders reading this, here is a more friendly summary. And an even shorter summary: iOS apps cannot just run any sort of code in the background, only a few specific types tasks are allowed to run when the app is not in the foreground. iOS is very strict in this regard as to what you can do. Astra Itinera is not performing any of the allowed background activities when it is in the background. TokyoDan Well-Known Member Oct 7, 2010 394 2 18 #14 TokyoDan, Dec 5, 2013 Last edited: Dec 5, 2013 Thanks. Here are a few questions: 1. When I have enough resources to build a warship and the corresponding build button becomes active, do I have to tap the button (which then becomes a progress bar) to build the ship, or is the building of that ship started automatically? in the instructions it say that it will start being built by that planet. To me, this sounds like I don't have to tap the button. 2. The region explanation is not clear. What does the size of a region depend on? How can i tell how the boundaries of a region are defined? 3. Movement. If I want to move one ship to a specified destination, do i have to tap that ship and tap the destination every turn? Or will the ship continue to move to the destination automatically every turn until it reaches the destination? 4. And how far does a ship move each turn? That is not mentioned anywhere. 5. The Astra Itinera lines are broken and not continuous. Why? (forget this as I see that theybare only shown in explored ares of deep space) 6. although the color scheme is nice and the minimalistic design is great (like Rymkapsel) the player colors are not distintive enough and often I can't tell if a ship is or isn't mine. 7. There should be a way to turn off the music. But I do like the design and concept of your game. nyquist Member Dec 3, 2013 8 0 0 Developer Colorado http://nyquist.net #15 nyquist, Dec 5, 2013 You're right, that could be worded better. You have to click the button to start building on that planet. Regions are variable in size. They are not dependent on the number of planets (other than the fact that they cannot be smaller than the number of planets). You can tell the regions by their color. Lighter blue is an uncontrolled region, meaning no one controls all the planets in the region. A color means that player controls all planets in that region. Deep space is the dark blue. The ship will move automatically to its destination unless you interrupt it by tapping it again. Two squares, unless you hit the skip turn button. Your color is green. Any other color is an enemy. Gray are the marauders who stay planet bound, another color is one of the tyrants. I do want to make them more distinctive in future versions without straying too far from the minimalistic design. Perhaps some subtle variation with markings to reflect the respective empires. Anytime you (or anyone else) have questions, concerns, etc. Feel free to post in this thread, message me direct (via the forum messaging), post on the Facebook support page, or email me at [email protected]. TokyoDan Well-Known Member Oct 7, 2010 394 2 18 #16 TokyoDan, Dec 5, 2013 Thanks for all the answers. That clears it up wxcept for one thing... If the regions are variable how is is possible to know if you control ALL the planets in it? nyquist Member Dec 3, 2013 8 0 0 Developer Colorado http://nyquist.net #17 nyquist, Dec 5, 2013 When you control all planets in a region, the region changes to your color. Then you get an additional region resource bonus. And if you don't mind a spoiler tip... Spoiler it's a good strategy to make sure your opponents do not have any complete regions, especially big ones! You only need to take one planet from them to prevent them from having that region bonus. It's always fun to explore and find a large region with a low planet count, but that's true for your opponents too! Also, can warships use an Astra Itenera which isn't connected to a planet, only an astraship? nyquist Member Dec 3, 2013 8 0 0 Developer Colorado http://nyquist.net #19 nyquist, Dec 5, 2013 To make an Astraship, build it on the planet you want the new Astra Itinera to be connected to. When the ship is ready, you can fly it anywhere. The Astra Itinera that it creates can be used by other ships even when it is not connected to another planet yet! Spoiler tip Spoiler If you are building on a planet and it is conquered, the player who conquers will get the benefit of finishing the ship. Of course that works in your favor at times to. I never leave a planet that is building a ship unprotected. Spoiler tip Spoiler On longer games on the large map, I love using an Astraship to rapidly deliver Warships to a battlefront. I move my Astraship to the a hot area and then the Warship fly right down it into battle. Zakalwe42 Member Sep 5, 2013 14 0 0 #20 Zakalwe42, Dec 5, 2013 Ah hah! Another thing I've noticed - warships significantly outgun astraships. I guess that makes astraships kind of non-combat/support ships, but in any case, thanks very much for the advice (You must log in or sign up to post here.)
