I've thought about this a lot... Honestly there are no games I would consider art on the app store, but two games do come close, and those are Hi, How are You- the inclusion of so much Daniel Johnston art work makes it close, however it is still primarily a game not an expression of emotion like Johnston's work itself. The other is none other than Enviro-Bear 2010, especially if you consider comedy artful. I know many people will think I'm kidding but it truly has an aesthetic and uses its gameplay and graphics to convey it rather to simply entertain. Not the deepest artistic statement but one that altered how I view games. IMO only two video games ever are truly use the medium as art would be the ICO and Shadow of the Colossus. on a side note i feel like the app store is a huge step forward for games ast art by allowing a large audience for small open minded developers.
Hi, glad that you join the discussion! Don't you think some of the games even on this list could be considered art (maybe not greatest of the great, but still good art)? Thanks vor EnviroBear. Yes, I would agree. That game is a unique piece of art! There is no doubt about it. It is like mix of David Lynch meets Mel Brooks, no? (hey, don't forget to mention Silent Hill 2 if you mention the PS2 or even San Andreas... but let us not get distracted by other platforms and let's not talk about PC, there is really great art out there) Enviro-Bear 2010 Captain Games Inc. Come for the absurdist humor, stay for the limited, but deceptively deep game design." - Anthony Burch, Destructoid "It's fantastically manic and unapologetically absurd, and any would-be quibbles about the touchiness of its vehicular controls are instantly headed-off and negated by the bare fact that bears don't know how to drive cars." - Brandon Boyer, Offworld OMG, better yet, check out all those magnificent user reviews! "...a kind of psycho-religious version of Frogger..." - New York Times "Daniel Johnston's iPhone Game Is Predictably Bizarre, Bizarrely Fun" - Gizmodo.com "...Hi, How Are You has taken on a whole new layer of awesome..." - TouchArcade Hi, How Are You is a 3D platformer based on the art and music of the late Daniel Johnston, and starring his well-known character, Jerimiah the Innocent. Jerimiah has been transformed into a frog by an evil force and must reverse the curse to rescue the love of his life. Help him regain his true form by outrunning, outsmarting, and outmaneuvering his enemies through increasingly tough obstacles in a bizarre, otherworldly universe. It's not enough just to find the exit — Jerimiah has to hop on every green square in the stage to open the way forward, and each labyrinthine level contains special bonus squares as well. With 40 different stages and 4 different forms, you've got your work cut out for you! The entire game showcases Daniel Johnston’s music, creating an interactive music video like no other. High scores aren’t the only prize either, as each new achievement unlocks a unique piece of Daniel’s artwork. * An Awesome Soundtrack: Hop along to tunes drawn from Daniel Johnston's 2001 album, Rejected Unknown! * Explore 40 Stages: Discover hidden secrets, find time-saving shortcuts, and set foot on every green square to open the path forward! * Take Daring Leaps: As a frog, Jerimiah is able to cover some pretty serious distances with his jumps. Cross wide gaps and climb to great heights! * Stylish Graphics: Travel through worlds inspired by Johnston's artwork and see his sketches come to life in full 3D! * Master Different Forms: Jerimiah begins the game as a frog, but he'll eventually take on three other forms, each with their own unique properties! * Choose Your Controls: Play with virtual buttons for a more classic experience, or use tilt controls to really get moving! The funny thing is, I did very little to add personality to Flick- all his personality comes from the way the player moves him around the screen- he can be erratic or float about with finesse. A main component is how people react to the character under different circumstance- when he is torched by a flame or frozen solid. Some people purposely hurt him, others feel badly for him. Flick just continues on as if it is daily routine. Artwork: The world is is extremely simple and completely based on sillhouettes. This is to provide focus on the main character, items and hazards, which all appeary in full color. Sound: Sound effects were inspired by the silent film era: music and sound back then were provided by a full orchestra. Sound effects were created by individual instruments or short tunes. To some degrees, Flickitty accomplishes this, but I am not an audio technician. If our sales are high enough, I would like to hire a proper audio technician to recreate the sound effects as I intended. I have just about finished my AA Degree in Fine Art, and will be continuing to a BA in Fine Art. Last year, I won a few wards for my artwork (including faculty award), and a lot of what I learned was applied to Flickitty.
