Actually, multitasking is the biggest limitation of Apple mobile devices. It's literally the most mentioned issue with the iPad based on the current reviews. But, the new 4.0 update if all is to be believed should add multitasking functionality as well as videoconferencing.
to answer a question asked a few pages back, the reason apple makes you pay for updates is because when you buy your product (ipod, laptop, videogame etc) you pay for a specific configuration and size of software. just like when wow brings out new patches, your legal info changes, and you have to re-agree to the size of your software. for apple to give free updates, you would have to (when you buy your product) pre-agree to the specific configuration of a future release. also, why the hell wouldn't they? 10 bucks extra from each customer each update? no brainer.
