They are in no way required to play, or complete the game. The game is $0.99 and you get everything in the description you see in iTunes... full campaign with 30 levels, survival mode, leaderboards an achievements (both OF and GC) and a selection of 6 weapons that are all upgradable as you progress through the campaign (and also the survival mode... although in survival the upgrades happen in a different way). The IAPs are for things like new weapons that have different characteristics than the standard weapons, but they are not like uber-weapons that you need to do well in the leaderboards or anything. All weapons are balanced, if not then that's something I'll correct through updates if I find that that's the case. There is also an IAP for a new game mode called Lost in Space. The IAP system is also in place so I can add even more stuff in the future, like new additional game modes and maybe more new weapons. But, you do get the full game when you buy it, nothing extra is required to play or finish the game. I hope this helps.
