I was tempted to buy this back during release simply for a nostalgia trip. AnarKitty Well-Known Member Oct 10, 2010 3,654 0 0 Minneapolis, USA #3 AnarKitty, Aug 13, 2011 I was similarly tempted before, and forgot about it until now. Having played it quite a bit tonight since getting it, I found myself at first agreeing with "Eh, been here, another Outrun clone" reviews, but got hooked shortly thereafter. Now I'm firmly in the "I understand why Attack of the Show highlighted this game" camp. Feels very authentic, controls are solid, and it really does pull you in. Absolutely worth getting for retro race fans, and anyone who's curious. EfratBarTal Well-Known Member Mar 5, 2011 2,351 17 38 Female CEO Tel-Aviv #4 EfratBarTal, Aug 13, 2011 Whoops! This game can really grow on you Habakuk Well-Known Member Dec 11, 2008 4,779 9 38 Vienna, Austria http://rossau.wordpress.com #9 Habakuk, Aug 13, 2011 Thanks! Runs fine on iPad 2. There is obviously no fine tuning of steering. Turn OR turn NOT (go straight). But you have more options on speed. Nice retro complement in my huge racer collection. Why must every arcade racer dev default on rubber banding? It just makes the game frustrating, urgh! I really wanna like this game, but I feel punished for everything I don't do perfectly. jb@photon Active Member Jun 9, 2009 36 0 6 http://photoncreations.com #13 jb@photon, Aug 14, 2011 Thanks for the comments guys. Only free for a limited time 8 Bit Rally should be coming to PC & Mac in the not too distant future as well 8 Bit Rally doesn't use any type of catch-up or rubber banding. Each AI car has a speed setting per track and they stick to that (except corners). chess Well-Known Member Jun 17, 2011 436 0 0 #14 chess, Aug 14, 2011 Interesting. Do they react to the moves you make or the position of your car? It might be my imagination, but it feels like they position themselves to obstruct you. I feel like I have to lead them one way and then pass on the other (if true, this would be a cool thing). jb@photon Active Member Jun 9, 2009 36 0 6 http://photoncreations.com #15 jb@photon, Aug 14, 2011 They veer from left to right and back. And repeat that. They only change if there is a slower car in front of them. Quite a few people have mentioned that it feels like they get in your way, but it's just coincidence. Once you spot the pattern, they get easier to predict. Capsizing Heart Well-Known Member Jul 21, 2011 316 0 0 Student. Transient. #16 Capsizing Heart, Aug 14, 2011 No rubber banding? Then how is it that if I don't do a corner perfectly every car that I have passed hurtles passed me and vanishes into the distance? chess Well-Known Member Jun 17, 2011 436 0 0 #17 chess, Aug 14, 2011 I'm migrating to the Capsizing Heart camp in that the more I play this game, the less I like it. It's absurdly frustrating. I don't see the rubber banding, but the collision detection makes me want to kick a puppy. When another car barely nips my rear quarter panel, drags me to a halt and teleports in front of me, I want to just delete the game. Further, the game is set up so you absolutely HAVE to do the upgrades as you go. I was trying to save up for the "good" car, and it's pointless because you can drive flawlessly through a whole race and still not even get in the top 5 if you haven't done every upgrade. Finally, the AI players never mix up...always the same guy at the top of the pack...so you pretty much have to win every race. I recommend keeping the AI but mixing up the AI players so the same guy isn't in first every time. Bottom Line: Please take a look at the collision detection and pace the cars so a person can make 1 mistake in three laps (or make no mistakes without upgrades) and still have a chance to win. As it is, I couldn't recommend this game to anyone I like, because I wouldn't wish the frustration on them. Diablohead Well-Known Member Jan 19, 2009 1,553 1 0 Freelancer, PC game developer #18 Diablohead, Aug 14, 2011 I love this game, bought it and I still play it now and again, very good throwback to the classic racers. Sounds like half of you here never played a racing game like this on the megadrive, sms, nes or arcade 20 years ago, the AI is fine and plays just like the old racers do. Capsizing Heart Well-Known Member Jul 21, 2011 316 0 0 Student. Transient. #19 Capsizing Heart, Aug 14, 2011 Yeah and the upgrades are so expensive, you're caught in this endless circle. You have to come in pole positions to have enough money for upgrades but you need the upgrades to come in the pole positions... Just because it plays like a racer 20 years ago did, doesn't make it good. I love the Megadrive, it was a huge part of my childhood, but I can recognise all the achievements the gaming medium has made since. I understand that fully programmed AI that isn't just on set paths or rubber banded is a little much for a game on an iPhone, but holy crap this is frustrating. chess Well-Known Member Jun 17, 2011 436 0 0 #20 chess, Aug 14, 2011 OK, so I started over to see if upgrading made a difference. It did, and I was much more able to compete. It also helped to know that the AI just goes back and forth, so now I just aim at where the car is rather than trying to avoid it, which is your natural instinct. That said, I still have two recommendations: Collision Detection: If an AI car hits a player car in the side, the players car should always "win". Now, it's just the opposite. D-pad: This may seem like an odd one, but I can't tell you how many times I just miss the right side of the D-pad causing a crash and instant loss, and it's super aggravating. Please make the right side of the D-pad bigger...much bigger since there's no reason not to. As for past experience, my first console was an Atari 2600, and I've owned most consoles since, so yeah, I've experienced classic racers. More than anything, this one reminds me of Pole Position.
