That's what i ended up doing as well...i spent the 100 minutes between floor 20 and 27 and must have knocked out half the worlds mage...
This you can easily fix through the "auto hide" setting.
The shaking I believe means time is beginning to run out...it will get louder as you get nearer expiration which is a really nice feature....So...

Mindfield - Not sure you ever got into Rogue Touch but in essence the true incentive was to keep diving..Getting the Amulet on level 26 and back...
Dogmeat - On the endless mode I presume you just don't pick up the sword on level 20 and then you will be able to keep diving without time...
Sounds like Mindfield is experiencing the same problem as me...i did give up in the end and now have a lost level 36 hero with nowhere to go and...

Nasty business.....do we know if they are likely to dive deeper or is it completely random??? i.e. could take any stairs/pit/rope, etc...
