The star system is better as you are only penalized for dying, in SM1 you also had to find all the tokens/hints.

I downgraded back to 9.3.4 ohh this is great. Fortunately downgrading was pretty easy.

I tried two different spots and there was nothing there, on island one every mark had a crate, seems like a bug.
