Not really except that they're cheap. Riflemen are way better especially late game because they can pierce armor.
They wouldn't get gold from you storage only your gold mine.

Use taunt to make orcs follow you. And have riflemen pick them off.

Which part makes you fail. I killed the enemies surrounding the troll then used giants to kill the troll while repairing my reinforced walls.
Are you getting paired up with lots of prestige 15? I'm getting paired up with them a lot at prestige 7.
Yeah it's random. I once got a legendary rune while playing campaign. But the more time you last, the better rune...
