I just beat the 6th 'world' after much struggle; ended up doing so with a combination of Flame Thrower + Laser Cutter + purple Repair Drones......
The only logical explanation I can think of is Apple fudged up on timing for their '12 Days of Christmas' promotion, and this is Day 1. I guess...
