Gems are useful, you can buy up bag space and bank space. Cosmetic stuff is just cosmetic.
Yeah, I got both and still have 3 solo. Which is kinda plenty if you're multitasking between 5 characters. Lol.

I made that same mistake. Your hero lvl goes up when you spend real money. Gems can not buy hero lvl up.

Not everything is bind on pickup. You actually CAN send stuff to alts, but it costs 2 gold. 1 for auction house fee, 1 for minimum sale price....
